Eight questions, no overthinking. Ready?

One evening, several ways to walk out of it

A look that lingers, a joke you hand back, a message that waits until tomorrow. Every way of flirting has its own symbol.

Play along,it won’t bite

Tick what you would do, or write your own line. A Persona sets the eight scenes, and your card comes from those eight answers and nothing else.

It stays in your account. It only goes out if you share its private link, and you decide.

  1. Know how you play

Eight scenes, one line to pick each time. You watch yourself play, and nobody counts the points.

  2. Pick your pitch

Flirting, couple, conflict, each test has its own pitch. You take the one where you want to see your game.

  3. Kick off

Then you can write to a Persona, see what comes back and adjust along the way. The real match is waiting outside.

Who says the first line, who lets the second one come

Someone catches your eye from the far end of the room. Do you walk over, wait for the look to come back, send a friend ahead as a scout? This flirting test takes those seconds seriously, because they decide an evening more often than anyone admits. It looks at your flirting style, the one that comes out when you had no time to prepare it.

A Persona puts the scenes to you one by one: a joke aimed at you, a message left on read, a date that never turns up. Answer on first reflex, the Tuesday-night kind, when nobody is watching. Every reaction has its strengths and its misfires, and flirting needs both.

Three of the eight situations

Three scenes out of eight, to set the tone.

  • A full table, and a glance that lingers two seconds too long.
  • A joke about you thrown out in front of everyone, and the comeback that does not arrive.
  • A date who does not show, and a message to write, or not.

Your flirting style is decided in the second a glance comes back

We flirt on a tiny information budget, a look, a line, one silence too long. This flirting style test watches what you do with those seconds, eight times over, and the research below suggests the hard part is sometimes knowing whether the message landed.

  • Waiting for the second glance

A glance meets yours across the room and you hold still until it comes back. One second, two, time stretches. If it returns, you move. If not, the evening keeps its shape and the question stays asked of nobody.

  • Cards down, coffee still hot

The question lands, ā€œare you flirting with me?ā€, and your answer is out before the silence sets. Yes. The hinting stops dead, what was left to decode is on the table, and what follows is played in the open.

  • The comeback that shows up late

They laugh at you in front of everyone, and you smile along. The perfect comeback turns up on the way home, beautifully worded, and the conversation moved on long ago.

  • Sent while still angry

A missed date. Your message goes out before the anger has finished cooling, direct, unwrapped. What it says is clear. What you would have written after a night’s sleep stays a mystery, even to you.

  • Some air between messages

A lovely evening, then nothing. No message the next day, or the day after. You leave some air while the wish takes shape, and the exchange stays as it is with your reason in your back pocket.

  • One very open ear

A message on the way home, another in the evening. When they mention someone else they like, you listen hard, wearing the face of a good sounding board. Being there is how you speak, and it can run ahead of a decision not yet made.

  • The second message, maybe

The second message may have been the one that was missing. Replies drag and you do not follow up, probably not the moment. You keep it light, no expectation to meet, no plan to defend, and the ball stays where it landed.

  • A day, a place, an invitation

It is going well, so you are already scouting what comes next. With someone hard to reach, you bring out the specific proposal, with a day, a place, a real invitation. It saves time, and what follows depends on the answer it gets.

  • Teased, you tease back

Teased, you tease back in the same tone. A silence, a follow-up, then you wait. None of it makes noise, which makes it easy to follow. Few surprises in your flirting style, and a flirt that arrives on time.

Jeffrey Hall, a communication researcher at the University of Kansas, started by asking everybody. With co-authors he had 5,020 adults fill in a questionnaire (Communication Quarterly, 2010) and came out with five flirting styles: traditional, physical, sincere, playful, polite. The abstract adds that the physical, sincere and playful styles go with more dating success. The limit sits in the method, these are people describing themselves, and nobody watched anyone flirt.

So Hall went and watched. In Hall, Xing and Brooks (Communication Research, 2015), 52 pairs of single college students who had never met chatted alone, believing they were in a study of first impressions. Afterwards each participant said, in a separate room, whether they had flirted and whether the other had. When the other was flirting, says the university’s release, 36 percent of men and 18 percent of women noticed. Hall likens it to spotting a liar, we assume people tell the truth and we miss the exception. Students, strangers, and their own account as the only referee.

What stays with me is that a flirt can leave cleanly and still not arrive, a fair offer on a market where most buyers walk past. Our eight scenes have never stood in front of a committee, and Hall’s work does not cover them. I wrote them so you can recognise a move.

Three lines to read before you blush

What the test looks at

A game, with no scientific validation behind it. It reads four traits (courage, gentleness, friendliness, ambition) across eight flirting scenes and gives no score. Nobody wins, nobody loses.

On instinct, no rehearsed line

Go with the first reflex. Each scene offers three answers, none of them is the one you are supposed to give, and you can write in your own words if none sounds like you.

Your card, after the eighth scene

After the last scene, the Persona asks for your e-mail address to show you your card. It then stays in your account, next to your conversations, and you can show it to anyone you like with a private link.
